The Sea Captain’s House in the Myrtle Beach oceanfront resorts area has been serving visitors and locals for more than 50 years in its picturesque oceanfront location. But did you know that it was originally built and used as a vacation home? There’s a rich history to this popular restaurant in Myrtle Beach and we’re here to tell its story.

The History

Sea Captains House

Henry Taylor built a cottage in 1930 on the beautiful Atlantic Ocean for he and his family to use as a vacation home. The Taylor family visited from North Carolina for more than 10 years until it was sold to Charles W. Angle in the 1940s. Disaster struck in October of 1954 when Hurricane Hazel battered the Myrtle Beach coastline. The cottage was then purchased by Nellie G. Howard who replaced the damaged oceanfront porch with a Florida Room and opened a guesthouse called Howard’s Manor. The guesthouse offered nine different rooms with fantastic ocean views and served three delicious meals each day.

By the 1960s guesthouses were becoming less and less popular as visitors were flocking to brand new high-rise style motels. In fact, Howard’s Manor was sold to the Brittain family in 1962 and bought to be torn down and built into one of these motels.

The Brittains decided to wait a year or two to begin construction as financing was limited at that time, transformed the guest house into what’s now the Sea Captain’s House – and the rest is history. From that day on, the restaurant has been serving fresh seafood with the southern hospitality and views that everyone loves.
